Most beaches are easy to access and good for swimming and snorkeling. Most Beach Parks offer BBQ facilities, picnic tables and showers. Enjoy surfing, boogey boarding, Kayaking, fishing at some of the best beaches in the world.
MOST POPULAR BEACHES ON THE BIG ISLAND
KEALAKEKUA BAY
- Access by boat tour or Kayak to snorkel coral reefs at Captain Cook Monument.
ANAEHO’OMALU (“A”) BAY
- This beach is protected from high surf by an offshore reef. It is a moderate spot for snorkeling, better for surfing when tide is high, Outrigger club meets to paddle weekly. Great for sunbathing and absolutely during sunset.
MAUNA LANI RESORT – MAKAIWA BAY
- Small beach club on the south end of the Mauna Lani resort property. Sandy beach entry with best snorkeling found further out where the water clears. Plenty of coral and large fish. Note: Chairs are reserved for resort owners and their guests.
MAUNA LANI RESORT – HONOKAOPE BAY (49 BLACK SAND BEACH)
- Black sand beach with lava rock cliffs. Excellent for snorkeling unspoiled coral reef with some pinnacles.
PAU’OA BAY AT THE FAIRMONT ORCHID HOTEL
- A comfortable sand bottom entry is great for beginner swimmers or snorkelers since it is protected by large lava rocks that surround the beach. Better snorkeling outside the protective rocks with opportunities to see turtles. Note: Hotel chairs and bungalows are reserved for hotel guests only.
WAIALEA BEACH (BEACH 69)
- Combination sandy beach with shade trees. Snorkeling is best with a calm ocean.
HAPUNA BEACH
- Hapuna beach is the longest white sand beach on the Big Island and good for boogey board and body surfing when waves are high and snorkeling is good if the water is calm.
KAUNA’OA (MAUNA KEA) BEACH
- Snorkeling here is excellent when the water is calm. The best fish and coral can be found next to the rocky points at either end of the beach. Parking space at Mauna Kea beach is limited.
KAHALU’U BEACH PARK
- Very popular with local surfers on the right side. Snorkeling is good on the left (south) side of the beach.
LAPAKAHI STATE HISTORICAL PARK
- Lapakahi State Historical Park features are the partially reconstructed ruins of the ancient fishing village and is also a Marine Life Conservation District. There is a multitude of fish and good snorkeling, but to protect the reefs, no sunscreen is allowed.
- Be aware of high surf during winter months, and strong currents outside of Koai‘e Cove so stay within the cove for snorkeling and swimming.
MANNINIOWALU (Kula Bay)
- Inside the exclusive resort, there is a small sandy white cove great for swimming and snorkeling.
